SPOTLIGHT ON GREGORY PORTER CD WATER

With his rich baritone sound and intelligent, sensual lyrics, Gregory Porter’s star is fast rising on the jazz and soul scene. This highly anticipated debut recording, which features seven compelling originals and four standards, captures the intensity of Gregory’s live performances and establishes him an important new voice in jazz, gospel, and soul. “A fantastic young singer” is the word from jazz icon Wynton Marsalis.

Album Notes

“It’s an album of love and protest,” says Gregory Porter of Water. Love and protest: inextricably twinned emotional drivers of jazz, and primary elements, along with faith and perseverance, of the social and spiritual trajectory of a people. “The full color of jazz is love, its songs of redemption, its power to the people,” Porter says. “It’s pretty and it’s ugly, like the blues, like the people that the music comes from. I think about these things when I’m writing. But when I bring it to fruition, I try to make it feeling.”

Maybe that is why Porter’s compositions, no matter the theme, possess such unerring grace and sweetness. It dwells in the bittersweet nostalgia of love lost, on the opening duet “Illusions” with pianist Chip Crawford; in the desert shimmer and glittering ornaments of “Pretty,” which the ensemble renders with the quicksilver lyricism of a fugue; in the whimsy, light-filled joy of “Magic Cup.” Even the righteous epic “1960 What,” with its succession of horn solos that wax martial or indignant, arcs toward a catharsis in trumpeter Melvin Vines’ plaintive scream.

Beneath it all courses water, the album’s title element and, says Porter, an almost accidental guiding theme that manifested itself as the work took form. The Nile, water of ancestry. The water the slaves crossed in the Middle Passage and in which so many met their end. Baptismal water, the water of belief and redemption. Urban water that rains down onto windows and pavements, tears away grime and gushes angry into gutters. And pastoral water too, the water of morning dew and gentle streams.

“The points in the music in which water comes up, for me, are the most killing moments on the album,” Porter says. But those riverine qualities �— ebb and flow, swell and release �— are hallmarks of the album as a whole, and of the way Porter, as a vocalist, approaches a single song. “I’ll start big and go down, start small and get big �— there’s an emotional arc I go through, and I try to have a beginning, a middle and end to each song.” Blessed with great texture, warmth and control, he can cast away the crutches of formalism, and moan and holler or whisper and hesitate before bringing it all back home.

The blues is overt on Water. So are gospel and soul. Addressing these core seams of American music is as important to Porter as is appreciating the jazz songbook or the legacy of his hero Nat King Cole. In the textures of church and country dwell the echoes of Porter’s childhood in Bakersfield, CA., a place where agriculture and opportunity drew Black folks from the South.

“That’s where I got the gospel rearing I have,” Porter says. “Outdoor services in the dirt, a woman from Texas with three gold teeth in her mouth, singing her heart out. I don’t know if I would have got that if Bakersfield was slicker.” The place owned a kind of rough beauty: “Mornings the sun was bright and we’d go out and lie on some cement, there were birds and lizards and the smell of jasmine and honeysuckle, the water in the gutter seemed like it was a stream.”

Porter’s music still brims with this keenness to the lyricism of small things. He carried it through his training, the years of musical theatre in regional productions and a long Broadway run of “It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues” that established him on the New York scene. His artistic pantheon includes Cole, Joe Williams, Jimmy Witherspoon, King Pleasure but also Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gave.The a cappellas of Mahalia Jackson inspired his solo delivery of the classic “Feeling Good,” this album’s coda.

An old soul, Porter could not help but turn Water into a generational encounter, anchored by the stirring contribution of the great James Spaulding on “Black Nile” and “Wisdom,” a song of deep spiritual force. Crawford and Vines represent the new old-heads; the rest of the band are young guns on the New York scene. They recorded in a big open room, running the tunes down straight, top to bottom: “I wanted to get a live sound, the feeling of this music just coming together,” Porter says. “Any cool things that happened, just happened. That’s the way it went down.”

These days, Porter makes his home in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn; when he’s not on tour, he’s often found in Harlem, stirring the hip, diverse crowd at the venerable St. Nick’s Pub. The city has changed; so has the country, and even the music as well. What Gregory Porter knows, and shares in his music, is that the spirit and the beauty remain.

THE MARK CRADDOCK TRIO is actually the backup band for legendary Chicago keyboard player Ken Saydak. Ken has recorded for Rounder, Delmark and Evidence Records and has backed virtually every major Chicago Blues artist of the last 30 years, including Johnny Winter, Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Lonnie Brooks, Mighty Joe Young and Sam Lay. Ken was gracious enough to guest on the first solo effort by Mark and the band.

The Mark Craddock Trio hails from Southern Colorado, but Mark made a name for himself in the 1980s on the West Coast where he appeared regularly in the house band at John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Room. Drummer David Zehring is originally from the Kansas City area but toured with Ann Margret in the early 1960s. He worked with KC jazz legend Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson in the 1970s and more recently with Nashville blues artists Fred James and Mary-Ann Brandon. Bassist Tom Reid has been a fixture on the Colorado music scene for many years and has worked regularly with Taxim Records recording artist Steve Hohn, leader of the band The Taints and producer of this CD. The MC3 has one foot firmly in the grand tradition of the 1960s sound of Blue Note and Prestige Records, and the other in the current "Jam Band Jazz" sound pioneered by Medeski, Martin & Wood.

The Mark Craddock Trio featuring Ken Saydak may be filed under "Jazz", but there is much to like for fans of any kind of funky music.

Jazz vocalist Sarah DeLeo takes the best from the masters and combines it with her own signature style to produce a sound that is both timeless and fresh. One hears her singing and is swept away to another time, and yet her powerful presence as a musical storyteller is thoroughly in the here and now: No matter the song, she delivers each lyric in such a personal way that the listener feels as if they are hearing their own stories. Her tireless exploration of many different styles of music yields fascinating results when it comes to song choices and arrangements, and her inventive melodic improvisation makes every restatement of a tune’s melody thoroughly engaging – nothing’s ever the same twice.

For over 15 years, Rare Blend’s music resonates with purists as well as those who embrace a progressive multi-genre approach to original instrumental music. Pulling from a variety of influences and musical styles, Rare Blend continues to receive favorable press reviews, and radio airplay, performing at a variety of concerts and outdoor festivals, and have been invited to be included on regional and national compilation discs.
Because of their diversity and growing catalog of music, Rare Blend can be found performing on bills that range from Jazz to jam band, fusion to progressive rock. They have shared bills or have opened for the likes of David Sanborn, Special EFX, Ozric Tentacles, Tunnels, Dark Star Orchestra, Kevin Eubanks, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Spyro Gyra, Frogg Cafe, Los Lobos, and others...
Started in 1993, Rare Blend (Samalot / Holt), released their debut independent CD entitled Cinefusion as a duo. In 1998, Rare Blend expanded to a four piece with bassist/composer Jeff Scott and drummer Paul Stranahan. As a quartet, Rare Blend added additional musical texture to the original concept and took the live performance to a new level.

Sessions features new songs and improvisations from shows in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and in-studio improvs recorded at Odyssey Studios in Cleveland. Also included are selections from a taping for the Crooked River Groove television program (title track - Hipster Spinster), as well as performances during their 2008 Bridging The Gap music/film series against the backdrop of such classic films as; Phantom of the Opera and Metropolis.

Gini Wilson, known as The Duchess, is legendary in the Bay area as a brilliant jazz pianist, entertainer, and composer. In concerts and interviews she is also noted for her irreverent sense of humor . She is the Director and, with reedman Steve Heckman, the co-founder of The San Francisco ChamberJazz Quartet.
When not performing at concerts and festivals with the group, Gini performs regularly at well-known Bay area clubs such as Kuumbwa, Jazz at Pearls, and many jazz clubs in San Francisco. She has done many television and radio projects and was a regular on the NPR radio show “West Coast Live”. She has been the Music Director for many clubs and musical projects in the Bay Area. She studied classical piano (M. Music) and studied composition with the American master George Crumb before dedicating herself primarily to jazz.

Gini Wilson is well known as the Director and Co- Founder of the San Francisco ChamberJazz Quartet. Now she has released an album of solo piano jazz containing the same elements as the SFCJQ: technical virtuosity and poignant lyricism.

Biography

Since her debut performance at the Glasgow Jazz Festival in 2003, Faith Gibson has performed at jazz clubs and concerts in the UK and in Cologne, Bonn and Berlin, Germany and recorded her first CD You Don’t Know Me.

Faith has also studied with Silvia Droste, Judy Niemack and Sheila Jordan. In addition to writing her own songs, she collaborates with jazz composer Christopher Morse of Now Standards Music, Brooklyn, NY. She also operates her own internet radio station, Blossom’s Vocal Jazz, which was chosen Editor’s Pick on live365.com and has a loyal fan base of listeners around the world. Faith’s second CD, Big Moon, was released on June 15, 2009 and can be heard on radio stations in North America, Europe and (even) Australia.

Faith grew up in Pittsburgh and Miami, where she studied piano and flute, listened to a wide variety of music, and sang in her high school’s concert chorus. At Florida Southern College, she sang in the chorale and with the pop ensemble Southern Singers. However, it would be some time before Faith pursued a career as a jazz singer as she felt too shy to sing alone in front of an audience.

“A point came when I realized it was ridiculous to allow shyness to deny me things I always wanted. I began venturing outside myself and onto stages, first with ‘Lipstick,’ a vocal trio, and finally as a soloist.”

She attended the Fionna Duncan Vocal Jazz Workshop in Glasgow, Scotland, which gave her important tips and confidence. “I went away from that week knowing I was a jazz singer.”

Biography

With influences ranging from Wayne Shorter to Radiohead, Deerhoof to J Dilla, The Worst Pop Band Ever is a Toronto based group that tries to combine a love of improvisational jazz music and “indie pop”. Individually, the WPBE has worked with the who's who of Canadian and international musicians (see personnel), but together, whether it be blending acoustic bass with turntables or analog synths with the saxophone, the WPBE sets out to twist and bend both originals and covers, straddling genres and butting heads with expectation.
They have played festivals and clubs throughout North America including the TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival, the Ottawa Jazz Festival, IAJE, NXNE, as well as clubs like the Rex in Toronto, Schuba's in Chicago and the Beat Niq in Calgary.
They have shared stages/ toured with the Bad Plus, Happy Apple, Jeff Parker of Tortoise, Shannon Butcher, Rich Brown, Rich Underhill, Erik Hove, Elizabeth Shepherd, Seamus Blake and Kelly Jefferson.
Most recently the band finished a mini tour of the west where they played to packed houses promoting their latest CD, "Dost Thou Believeth in Science". The album has received national and international rotation and even reached # 1 on the Toronto College Radio Charts and has received numerous glowing reviews including from All About Jazz.

Their music has also been used for film and video, including work for the United Nations, Disney, Teletoon, CBC and the National Film Board. They played on the soundtrack for the multiple award-winning animated short, "Flutter." (NFB/PPF Multimedia Production) and most recently provided music for the NFB's tribute to Governor General Award Recipient, dancer, Peggy Baker.

Writing, recording, performing - which is your favourite aspect of being an artist and why?
   I love to write music, which I have been doing since I was 5 years old. The whole process, from the formulation of the first ideas, to the development of themes, to the adding of voices, to adding the colors of chords and chord changes, fascinates me. And when the composition is "done", I enjoy revisiting the work to edit, add, delete, and refine, until I am entirely satisfied that I have created the best, most pleasing music. First I must be happy, then others will be happy.
What do you want people to feel while listening to your music?
   Listeners should feel that they are hearing works of art, musical mood paintings, professionally rendered. Hopefully the music will touch emotions, perhaps reflection, sadness, euphoria, pleasure, sweetness, hopefulness - whenever a person is moved in a positive way by my music (as opposed to wanting to turn the music off) I have achieved my goals. And if the listener gains an appreciation for the skills of the composer/arranger/performer, then I am especially gratified.
What tours or performances are coming up for you?
Are you expecting few dates in Europe and in France in particular?
   I have no current plans for touring or live performances currently. Perhaps if my music gains some success in Europe, then I would consider future performing dates.
What are you listening to at the moment?
   Mariah Carey's latest CD "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel", composer Steve Reich's "The Four Sections", Whitney Houston's "I Look To You".

   I'm a composer, living in Nanuet, NY, where I am a private piano teacher. Born in Brooklyn, NY, I began piano lessons at 5 years old after my parents discovered I had the gift of music composition. Degrees: a BM/Ithaca College, MM in composition, theory and piano/Indiana University. Lainie’s career began at age three when she saw her first microphone. Love at first sight.
Then came her first radio show at 6, first TV show at 11, and band singer at age 14. Recording
artist took a little longer.

When a real jazz singer comes along one can’t help but take notice. And when at the age of 60
Lainie released her first CD “Here’s to Life” (Harlemwood 0101) everyone took notice. Now,
with the release of her second CD, “It’s Always You,” (Harlemwood 0108), Lainie lays claim to
what she’s been working on her whole life.
At thirteen Lainie won a city-wide talent contest in her hometown of Minneapolis: First prize - a
trip to New York. On the corner of 47th & Broadway with traffic streaming by and bright lights
dazzling her young eyes, she heard a voice - "Well, you're home now." It was prophetic.

After two years at the University of Minnesota, as a Theatre Arts major, she left for Broadway
and nightclubs, but her greatest successes came from commercials. Lots of them. For over 30
years she has been a successful voiceover artist. Credits include Jean Nate, Cremora, Asti
Spumante, Ford, McDonald's, The Daily News, Mortons, Gillette, Massengil, Saveur, Ideal Toys,
Boars Head, etc. to name but a very few, as well as dozens of Infommercials, Industrials, radio
and TV promos to numerous to mention.

In 1974, married, (now divorced), Lainie, her husband and a friend jumped into an enterprise that
would be the biggest adventure of her life. Leaving New York and an extensive career as a
voiceover actor and budding singer, she landed on the island of Jamaica running a poultry farm
and singing in island wide monthly concerts. Four years later she found herself in Los Angeles
still singing to rave reviews and core fans who continue to support her to this day.

In the early 80’s returning to her heart – New York City – she picked up where she left off -
singing in clubs, cabarets, concerts in New York and LA, and continuing to do voiceovers.

In the spirit of “giving back” Lainie began coaching younger performers and serving on the
National and NY Local Board of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists
(AFTRA). She is currently the National Recording Secretary of AFTRA. She is also
acknowledged as one of the best Voiceover coaches in the country.

Her unique style and voice contains no hype or attitude. She continues to thrill audiences old and
new with the pure emoting and gravitas only true life experience can endow in an artist.

do is about the song. It’s a very direct kind of communication. More than anything I
want to touch you. So I aim for your heart. The most important thing I can do is sing the

Born into a family of musicians in upstate New York, Calabria Foti grew up wholly absorbed in music. With both of her parents being highly trained and enormously talented individuals, they passed many a nugget of musical prominence down to young Calabria and she soaked up the talent like a sponge.

By 12, Calabria was kicking butt in jazz clubs and singing with her parents and their associates. She already knew how to groove on several instruments, including a serious knack for the violin. Drenched and baptized in jazz and classical, young Ms. Foti had her destiny carved out for her at a very early age. With influences from Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland, Calabria knew she wanted to connect with an audience and touch hearts in the same way those great singers had done.

I am always working on my own sound vocally as well as improvising and accompanying on piano in a jazz style; adding my own inflections of Rickie Lee Jones meets Diana Krall and edgy, unique tone. I met and began playing music and touring with Swiss/Canadian bassist and recording artist Danick Clavel in 2007 which really allowed me to jam my tunes and establish a solid performance calendar. My debut solo album Bucket of Honey is a proud accomplishment for me and it drops on September 23,09!! It features original tracks as well as two remakes from Tom Waits and Dizzy Gillespie. As a duo we perform regular gigs such as : cocktail parties, corporate functions, Hotel lounges, some bars or pubs, special event appearances in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and want to play more and tour the album well into 2010. Biography
Bonnie Lowdermilk has been singing and playing for as long as she can remember. She started piano lessons at age six. She has a degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in piano performance and piano pedagogy, and studied voice as a second instrument there. She developed a love of jazz at the University as well and began to perform professionally. She started out as a singer in the '70s, working with the best sidemen the area had to offer. Gradually, she started playing the piano more and more herself. She studied jazz piano with Denver's Ted Alexander, who gave her a strong background in Bill Evans voicings. Throughout the 1990's Bonnie lived and performed in Paris, France. She studied jazz piano with former Berkeley School of Music teacher, Katie Roberts. She played in the major clubs there and in 1998 played the renown festival, "Jazz in Marciac", where celebrities such as Wynton Marsalis and Shirley Horn have played. She also gave a 5 day vocal clinic at the festival. She recorded her first CD in NYC with the Fred Hersch Trio in 1996. She currently has a new CD in the works. (Click on listen.)

Bonnie works as a solo, duo, trio (piano, upright bass, drums) and in quartet, quintet and sextet formations (add sax, trumpet, trombone or guitar) for clubs, concerts, parties, and other events throughout the Denver area and beyond. She sings in French and Portugese as well as her native English. She also works as a piano and vocal instructor. Her choice of repertoire is distinctive and eclectic. While she knows how to sing and play most of the standards, she has a penchant for finding largely unknown treasures which have rarely been performed or recorded. Bonnie's singing is charged with emotion and sensuality, her voice supple and clear, with a warm low register and a luminous treble.

Selected for Uptown Jazz Online Radio in Aug. 2009, and Kanaljazz online radio in Oct. 2009, Rose-Marie Cameron has been involved in songwriting and performance for a number of years and wrote her first song at 12 years old. She has performed as a folk singer, country artist and classical performer. She has sung in small venues, during special occasions and in concert. She sings as a solo artist and has sung in a large performance choir. Rose-Marie has continued to write original material for radio airplay and concert venues, and her work has evolved greatly. She is now writing and recording light jazz songs with her co-writer, Carey Parder. Their music is catchy and well developed and is being promoted to Jazz and Adult Contemporary Radio stations as of January 5th, 2009. Their new song, entitled "High On A Hill" has great potential and they are very excited for its release. Rose-Marie has had "High On A Hill" translated into French and is considering having it recorded this summer.Between the two of them, Carey and Rose-Marie have four albums as well as this new single, which are available to the public through Hummingbird Studios in Calgary. Friends for a number of years, Rose-Marie and Carey continue to make magic with their musical inspirations and artistic connection.

Though the Frank-Hailey Eric Zukoski Trio’s last album, "Passing It Around", can still heard on rotation on radio, TV, and multiple compilations, after seven years, this Texas trio was itching to record another. The result, "An Old Sweet Song", named by Jazzlines (NPR) as one of the 10 best jazz records of 2008, is a concept album that features soulful, groove-heavy jazz interpretations of popular compositions not normally associated with the jazz genre, ranging from the likes of Strauss’ Blue Danube Waltz to Maria Muldauer’s Midnight At The Oasis.

All About Jazz noted that “Hailey is a cousin of seminal jazz pianist and composer Cedar Walton. But as this CD amply illustrates, Hailey need not invoke the reputation of his well-known relative to gain recognition, revealing he is a fine piano performer in his own right. . . Hopefully this initial outing is the forerunner of more albums in the future."

Diva Taunia is an award-winning (see award list below) jazz and cabaret vocalist that the Boston Globe has called a "powerful vocalist with a warm, rich sound." Like torch singers from the past, her style and image recall the smokey, sexy nightclubs of a different era while her music showcases modern-day topics, humor, and sensibility.
Diva Taunia has been a performing professionally since 1990, but recently relaunched her solo career after losing over 168+ lbs, and gaining a large following of fans watching her progress throughout the country (www.youtube.com/divataunia).
She hosts a weekly radio show every Monday night (6-7pm EST) called "The Backstage Pass Radio Program," and it features new original music and topics about her life post-WLS (with other related topics).

If, as Shakespeare wrote in Twelfth Night, “…some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them,” then Theo Croker fits into two out of three of the Bard’s categories. His talent is innate; he inherited a unique gift from his grandfather, the legendary trumpet player Doc Cheatham. But Theo is also an achiever. This is one young musician who is not afraid of greatness, or the hard work and dedication it takes to get there.

Theo Croker was born and raised in Leesburg, in central Florida, on July 18, 1985. Leesburg was not exactly a hotbed of music, and Theo wasn’t exactly born with a horn in his hand. He first picked one up at the age of eleven, after a visit to New York City where he heard his grandfather play at Sweet Basil. (Doc Cheatham died the following year, at 92, in 1997.) Theo continued to listen to Doc's recordings. "He had a very appealing sound, the strength behind it was always a melody," Theo says. “I would just sit in my room and play my trumpet for hours without knowing what I was doing. I would slowly teach myself new notes and play along with recordings of my grandfather and other greats. I noticed the I could fit in with what I was hearing harmonically.” It was at a memorial service for his grandfather when he had his first chance to perform for jazz-savvy audience. “I was only twelve years old, but the way the music touched people and the way it made me feel was enough to set me for life. I knew it was what I wanted to do.”

At sixteen, Theo moved, on his own, to Jacksonville, Florida so he could attend The Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. It didn’t take long before people noticed his talent. In 2004, Theo became the first artist in residence at the Ritz Theatre (a former black movie house transformed into a museum with a performance space). There he was commissioned to compose original works for the three separate groups: a seventeen-piece band and Septet he led, as well as an eighty-member choir (The Ritz Voices).

After high school, Theo had his pick of the country’s finest music schools, but the great Donald Byrd, the multi-Grammy Award winning composer and recording artist, was like a magnet that pulled him to the Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio. “My father died when I was eighteen, and he was a huge Donald Byrd fan. I remember seeing and hearing his records when I was young.” Other Jazz legends like Gary Bartz, Robin Eubanks, Billy Hart, Wednell Logan, Marcus Belgrave, and Dan Wall also taught at Oberlin. “I didn't want to study with teachers once I knew I could study with actual players, active Jazz legends. That made the call for me,” Theo says.

After graduating from Oberlin in 2007, Theo began his postgraduate education, hanging out and playing with older musicians like Benny Powell, Jimmy and Tootie Heath, Billy Hart, and Marcus Belgrave. They taught me how to live my life. Things not to do that they did, and things to do that they didn't."

Theo resists musical categories, a concept driven into him by his conservatory education. As deeply immersed in jazz as he is, Theo also writes and produces hip-hop, rap, and film scores, along with contemporary classical music, and other forms. So many of the greats have influenced him: Louis Armstrong, Doc Cheatham, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Booker Little, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, and Marcus Belgrave, as well as contemporaries like Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Terrence Blanchard. Composers like John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, and too many others to name. Other strong influences come from hip hop & R&B: Stevie Wonder, Digable Planets, Outkast, Quincy Jones, Pharell, and many, many others. All of Theo’s heroes live (or lived) their lives for the music.

Theo received the Presser Music Foundation Award in the spring of 2006. He used the grant money to record his first album, The Fundamentals, in New York City with his band The Theo Croker Sextet. The band’s members are all in their early twenties and each is as impressive as the next; they define the ambitious and highly-skilled lions of their generation. The Fundamentals includes ten tunes, all composed and arranged by Theo. It can currently be heard playing all over the world, in places such as Australia, The Netherlands, London, Quebec, New Zealand, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, Ukraine, Germany, Portugal, Scotland, France, Poland, Columbia, Turkey, and the Central Republic of Africa.

The response has been incredible. Donald Byrd praises Theo's musicianship: "There are good, great and nice musical players, but then there are phenomenal instrumentalist such as Theo. I would place Theo in a class of musicians who will redirect the flow, change and alter the current of today's New Jazz. Theo has the ability and the intelligence to challenge the direction of Nu Music. Theo is one of today's titans. He is a Sankofa".

Marcus Belgrave wrote: "Theo Croker is one of the most promising and creative trumpeters on the horizon today and is also one of the most energetic artists I have ever encountered."

Wynton Marsalis said: "He has the tools, the intelligence, the ability and the talents. The future looks bright for Croker.”

The legendary Jazz critic Nat Hentoff wrote: I first got to know 23-year-old Theo Croker after he returned from a gig in China (Shanghai's House of Blues and Jazz) and he was so impressive. On first hearing his trumpet on the immediately distinctive recording, I was struck by his "signature sounds" -- personal and indeed "in the tradition," but also contributing to its future. His is a voice speaking directly to the listener, and his avoidance of showboating technique reminded me of what Count Basie once said to Buck Clayton: ‘I'd give a thousand dollars to find a trumpet player who doesn't play so many notes.’ Furthermore, listening to Theo on ballads, it was at first hard to believe someone so young was able to sound as if he'd had extensive experience with affairs of the heart, gaining and losing love.”

Today, Theo lives and plays between NYC & Shanghai, China, where from September 2007 through January 2008 his Quartet held residency at the "The House of Blues and Jazz." In March 2008 the Theo Croker Quartet released In The Tradition, on Arbors Records, featuring Albert "Tootie" Heath on Drums, Sullivan Fortner on Piano & Joe Sanders on Bass.

Tine Bruhn's debut album "Entranced" is a welcoming blend of mellow, yet groove-based originals, 2 contemporary pieces by Joshua Redman with Tine's lyrics, songs by McCoy Tyner and Djavan, and a Swedish folk song arranged as a jazz waltz.

Tine Bruhn moved to New York City in 2001 after having graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then she has performed at some of the city’s best music venues including The Jazz Standard and The Cutting Room. Once a month Tine and her group of outstanding musicians perform at the well-know jazz club Zinc Bar in downtown Manhattan.
Born in 1978, Tine grew up belonging to the Danish minority in Flensburg, Germany. At the age of 15 she founded the a cappella group "Kvart I Fire" which gained high recognition in Denmark and Germany, especially after its release of the CD "Go 4 it" in 1996. The group kept an average of 3 performances a week during their high school years and they were requested at many official functions as well as private parties. Additionally Tine sang in classical choirs including the highly renowned semi-professional youth choir “Landes Jugend Chor Schleswig Holstein” and “Jugend Kammer Chor Flensburg”. Around that time she discovered her passion for jazz and started getting solo gigs.
In Boston she continued performing in a cappella settings, one of them being the "Vocal Jazz Ensemble" under the direction of Sharon Broadley-Martin, a Vox One member. She studied with Sheryl Bentyne from Manhattan Transfer, Walter Beasley, recording artist, Richard Evans, Grammy award winning arranger, and legendary scat educator Bob Stoloff.

Writing, recording, performing - which is your favourite aspect of being an artist and why?

That’s a really tough choice. We love writing because that’s where the magic happens; you are playing around, trying things out and all of a sudden, there is the beginning of a song… When it gets to recording, you watch it grow, taking on form and shape in often unexpected ways and it’s so great to experience what other musicians contribute to it. And performing—we very much enjoy the excitement of sharing the music and playing our hearts out

What do you want people to feel while listening to your music?
As if they were on a carousel ride to the candy stand :)
We hope they feel connected to what they hear, filled with imagery, transported, transcended, French, fauve…

What tours or performances are coming up for you?
Our next performance is an acoustic show at the Good Hurt in Venice on October 29, and we are in the process of booking full band shows for later this year/early next year in Southern California. Dates in Germany and France are planned for spring or summer of 2010; we will keep you posted!

What are you listening to at the moment?
Julian Coryell, “Profit and Loss”, Mother Eff “Are we famous yet?”

LIGHT BIO:
Santa Monica, CA. A foreign voice and a native producer team up to write and record a set of French songs, featuring an emotive vocal with tongue-in-cheek lyrics and compositions. Vieniste's songs are playing on Outbound Radio's Easy Mix Channel, WomensRadio, and Banana Peel Radio. They are following up their debut EP (11/08) with live shows and an upcoming full-length album.

Writing, recording, performing - which is your
favourite aspect of being an artist and why?

Writing and recording as I don’t perform any more. After more than 10 years performing, I have focused on writing finished songs for submitting to various labels and artists.

What do you want people to feel while listening to your music?

It’s gentle melodic pop, I make no excuses, it is just pop, I do however try to add something a little different in every song, and I am also know from my long intros to song.

What tours or performances are coming up for you?Are you expecting few dates in Europe and in France in particular?

No performances, but my music has been used on a number of TV shows in Europe, (Inspector Rex etc.) commercial advertising on radio in Spain and France and is used extensively in Asia on TV and radio. As I am from Australia, Asia is the big market for me.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Bob Sinclair has been a big influence and I still regard “Can you feel it” as the all time classic dance track, The Darkness, great writing and Mariah Carey, what can you say about that voice.

Writing, recording, performing - which is your
favourite aspect of being an artist and why?

Performing is my favorite aspect of being an artist but recording takes a close second. Performing original material is fun and inspiring, and I love connecting with the audience. When I play my original music to an audience, it's as though I am putting some new creation into existence and there is a feeling of upliftment afterward, as though the universe is supporting me. It is validating to have people enjoying my music and showing appreciation for it. The recording process is always a journey of discovery. It's exciting to see the new creation coming together and with all the technical options available these days in the recording process, there are unlimited poossibilities in terms of sculpting the sound. It's especially fun when I get to the mixing process and hearing it all come together.
What do you want people to feel while listening to your music?
I would like people to be drawn in and carried by the music and have a new experience. I think different music creates different moods and causes different emotional responses. I try to write music with original harmonic and melodic ideas to bring the listener through new emotional realms and experiences.

I am currently performing around the San Diego, California area.

Are you expecting few dates in Europe and in France in particular?

I haven't booked any tours in Europe but would love to tour there. It would be a treat to come to France. I welcome your suggestions and contacts in Europe so that we can create this.

What are you listening to at the moment?
I listen to alot of music and especially like the jazz-rock blending of Chicago and Steely Dan. I really appreciate many of the classic rock artists from the past such as Peter Gabriel, James Taylor. Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, and Quincy Jones.

Recording artist and composer David Hansen has created an inspiring collection of music, ranging in style from unique jazz originals to film scores. His jazzy compositions, pop sensibility and musical virtuosity are critical elements that have built his musical legacy for many years. Hansen began playing piano at age 9 and continued music studies recieving a degree in music composition.

We like every aspect of working as musicians. It's a need to work creatively, it's something very personal and it's also a nice part, when other people can enjoy what we are doing.

This is up to the ones who listen to our music. Hopefully we can touch people and it doesn't matter in what way.

Our next gig is in Switzerland on the 12th of November, we are planning a tour in Spring 2010

Writing, recording, performing - which is your
favourite aspect of being an artist and why?

It’s a difficult choice, but I’m going to say performing because of the immediate feedback and participation one has with the audience. Recording is great fun while you’re doing it, but it’s hard to be objective while listening back, although I’m getting better at it. Writing also can be wonderful and exciting when you get that first rush of inspiration, but often finishing a composition can be painstaking and even grueling. However, all of it is rewarding in the end.

What do you want people to feel while listening to your music?

I want them to feel moved. I want them to feel inspired, transported away from ordinary life and cares to a higher realm that hopefully carries over into their daily life, so that it somehow makes them in some small way better at living it, or feeling better living it.

What tours or performances are coming up for you?

My next performance is here in Boulder , CO at Trattoria on Pearl on Nov. 6.

Are you expecting few dates in Europe and in France in particular?

I used to live in Paris , and surrounding suburbs. I played at the renowned “Jazz in Marciac” festival in 1998 and recorded my first album “This Heart of Mine” with the Fred Hersch Trio on the French label Axolotl Jazz. Since returning to the states in 2000, I’ve mostly focused on staying put, playing around here, but it would be wonderful to return and play in France again, and I hope to be able to.

What are you listening to at the moment?
At this moment I’m listening to Kanal Jazz. I’m not sure who’s playing; it says John Evans, but it’s said that for quite awhile now so I’m sure that’s not accurate. But in general my favorite at the moment (being a singer/pianist myself) is Dena DeRose.

Jazz studies with Ted Alexander and Katy Roberts. 1997: First CD “This Heart of Mine” on the Axolotl Jazz label as a singer with the Fred Hersch Trio. 1998: played “Jazz In Marciac”. 2009: Second CD “Up To Now” as a vocalist/pianist. Played in a tribute to her former teacher Ted Alexander with Eddie Gomez on bass at Dazzle, Denver, CO.

Writing, recording, performing - which is your
favourite aspect of being an artist and why?

Performing is without question my favorite part of my work. Connecting with listeners, either in the band or in the audience, is one of the most intimate experiences I've ever had. I actually prefer playing smaller venues so I can see peoples' eyes and body language. It's also really liberating to not worry about being perfect in the way that one does when in the studio. Sometimes mistakes or missteps carry meaning live that recordings don't capture. There is something incredibly peaceful about performing that I don't experience anywhere else.
What do you want people to feel while listening to your music?
It depends on the tune. We've been covering a Queens of the Stone Age tune and also doing my own tunes which are often based on poets such as Derek Walcott and William Butler Yeats. So three chord rock? Yeah. Modal float? Absolutely.

What tours or performances are coming up for you?
Small gigs here in NYC.

Are you expecting few dates in Europe and in France

in particular?
No dates!

What are you listening to at the
moment?

Radiohead and more Radiohead, Mendelsohhn, The Be Good Tanyas, Green Day.

We performed today at the Green Festival in 
Washington, DC and we have show at Leadbetter's 
in Baltimore, MD on October 14 as part of the 
Baltimore Music Conference.  More dates are coming. 
We visited Paris, France a couple of months ago.  
it's a magical city and we would be thrilled to 
return and perform there.  We are actively seeking 
performance opportunities in Europe.

Dee Stone and Charles Wright stir up a bold blend
of jazz, soul, and rock. With impeccable guitar

is inspired and spirited, with earthy, intelligent
lyrics.

As performers, they draw you in with an intense
musical chemistry that is soulful, organic, and
fresh.
Charles and Dee worked together throughout the
mid-Atlantic region for several years in the Dee
Stone Band, na funk/rock unit. They recently married and
began working as an acoustic/electric power duo.
This creatively adventurous couple looks to explore
new ways to express sound and emotion.

Writing, recording, performing - which is your favourite

aspect of being an artist and why?

My two favourite aspects are definitely writing and recording. I kind of approach music like a tasty dish. Once a song is written, just like a fruit, it needs to ripen. When it is sweet enough, in its basic form, the dressing or presentation comes into play. Choosing the right arrangements & musicians will certainly make a difference. Adding the final touches, such as background vocals, small & intricate musical licks are like adding the spices & herbs to get that extra zing. Working with people who are of the same mindset is also important to me.

What do you want people to feel while listening to your 

music?

Reaching people with music is probably why all songwriters write. Feeling the heart and soul of the song they are hearing and hopefully it transports them into a wellness realm, if only for a few minutes, they forget all their problems.

What tours or performances are coming up for you? 

Are  you expecting few dates in Europe and in France 

in particular?

Not at the moment. I am in the process of tweaking more songs I’ve written and preparing to go into studio again.

LIGHT BIO:

Stemming from a jazz/big band musical family, bilingual singer/songwriter Linda Basso was born and raised in Montreal. Learning guitar at a very young age, she was exposed to music in all genres which contributed in creating her own style of adult contemporary songs flavoured with jazz and blues. She produced an EP album called Night Hub released in 2009.

Writing, recording, performing - which is your favourite aspect of being

an artist and why?

Having been both a recording artist myself and a producer/engineer for other artists, I can appreciate both sides of the glass, so to speak.
What always attracted me to being an artist is the ability to write, record and perform music that defines my
mood, my emotions and my spirit. I choose to compose without any boundaries, but always conscious about my music
being accessible and melodically memorable. I love to play live, there is nothing like the adrenaline of
performing your own music in front of other people and the freedom to interpret things differently every time. That is the true
beauty of playing original music.

What do you want people to feel while listening to your music?

I want people to feel comfortable. The "Wine & Chocolate" project is all about comfort and familiar things.
Like an appropriate wine being paired with the right cuisine, each Wine & Chocolate track is meant to evoke a different mood.
I have had comments that my music makes some feel sexy, some feel relaxed, some feel happy, but everyone feels comfort.

What tours or performances are coming up for you? 
Are  you expecting few dates in Europe and in France in particular?

I adore Europe. I think people in Europe and really anywhere outside the US are so much more responsive
to new music and much more appreciative of jazz in general.
I have an incredible band together with some of the best players in New York.
My representatives are working on arranging festival performances next year.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Eliane Elias and Porcupine Tree.

LIGHT BIO:

I was born in Moscow, studied classical piano from an early age and moved to New York as a teenager.
Attended the Westchester Conservatory of music, fell in love with jazz and progressive music.
I was signed to Geffen as a recording artist and Warner-Chappel as a songwriter in the early 90's.
Began producing and recording other artists in the 90's, nominated for a Grammy in 2007 as the producer.
Have worked with many prominent names, from Alan Menken to Ace Frehley.
Continue to perform regularly as a musical director/keyboard/guitar player.
Would love for "Wine & Chocolate" to become my only gig!
